MEDICAL SUPPLY SKIN BARRIER PASTE
Medical supply skin barrier is one of the ostomy solutions that are important
in taking care of the skin.
This barrier comes in different styles. It helps prevent skin stripping from adhesive
removal.
It is secured and is flexible for total skin protection around stomas, draining
wounds and other areas of irritation.
A medical supply skin barrier comes in sheets, films, rings and paste or creams.
Furthermore, medical supply skin barriers protect the skin from
irritating stomal discharge, and are durable in the presence of heat
and moisture.
Some medical supply skin barriers are designed with body contour to
provide comfort and allow freedom of movement.
Usually, medical supply skin barriers are made up of flexible materials
and sticky on both sides for a custom fit.
If the person has a problem with uneven skin or getting a good
seal, he or she can use stoma adhesive paste or powder with skin
sealant to get a better seal.
The stoma adhesive paste can be applied around the stoma right up to
the edge of the stoma itself and will not hurt it. If the person
chooses to use the skin sealant with the stoma powder, the skin sealant
should be applied first and left to dry; the sealant will act as a
barrier or a second layer of skin, so to speak.
The powder will be applied after the skin sealant has dried; it should
be brushed on around the peristomal skin lightly, and any excess should
be brushed away.
Either of these two ways of producing a better seal is acceptable and
depends on the ostomate's choice.
In buying medical supply skin barrier, make sure that you will have the good
one for stomas.
There are varieties of brands of medical supply skin barriers.
There is a product known as medical supply skin barrier paste.
It is used as caulking to fill in the space between the stoma and the opening
in the medical supply skin barrier.
It is not glue, thus it should not be used to keep the pouch on the abdomen.
The paste fills in gaps or uneven areas. It also protects skin around the stoma,
and can increase wear-time.
In putting up a medical supply skin barrier paste, it is vital
to remove the soiled wafer and gently clean the skin around the stoma
in the usual way.
Pat the skin dry. Apply a bead of medical supply skin barrier paste
around the stomal opening on the body side of the medical supply skin
barrier or apply the paste to the skin immediately surrounding the
stoma.
Then, let the paste air dry for a minute and gently place the wafer
over the stoma and on to the skin.
Hold in place for a few minutes, allowing the warmth of the hand to
mold it to the abdomen.
Lastly, attach the pouch to the flange on the medical supply skin
barrier.
